Being a Doctor specializing in the natural treatment of skin disease is not an easy job. Many conditions are stubborn and may not respond the way we want them to, leaving both the patient and the Doctor feeling very depleted. I have spent many a night worrying over the patient that I couldn’t help, going over and over in my mind all the possible reasons why. But when the treatment does work (which is a good percentage of the time and the real reason I keep doing what I do) I am always humbled and amazed.
Recently a patient came to me with very aggressive psoriasis, covering most of his body. He was inflamed, itchy, and obviously agitated from his condition. He had tried many western treatments, including very strong steroids which would temporarily bring the inflammation down but because of their strong potency he started getting nose bleeds and obvious thinning of the skin. Being at his wits end this patient found me, of all places, here on the internet and decided to give Chinese medicine a try.
Usually when I see such a severe case, I wonder just how effective herbal medicines will be. Psoriasis can be tricky to treat and there is a percentage of people that do not respond at all or very little. This fellow was still very eager to try. He applied the creams that I prepare myself from traditional recipes and he religiously brewed up his herbal medicines, drinking them twice a day. Upon his follow up appointment two weeks later I was amazed to see that he was probably 75% better!
This is quite remarkable really, as the patient pointed out himself that even the potent steroids didn’t work as fast, or as well. Of course we still have a ways to go to in order for a, hopeful, full recovery. I am just totally delighted to see such quick response to such an aggressive condition. Kudos to Chinese herbal medicine, kudos to my teacher Mazin Al Khafaji for passing on this knowledge, and kudos to my patient for having the courage and faith to try this ancient path of healing in the first place – giving me the opportunity to feel a comforting sense of “helpers high”.
Patient’s back upon first visit.
Patient’s back just two weeks into treatment.
Wishing you health,
Dr. Trevor Erikson
Nice work Dr. Erikson!
Chinese Medicine really works – and you have the pictures to prove it! Your patient must be feeling so happy and relieved. Can’t even imagine what suffering he must have been through.
Wow those pictures say 1000 words! We got a lot of feedback from the leg photos we ran with your article, Dr. Erikson, in Health Action magazine, too.
Thanks Michelle. Seeing your comment just reminded me that I still need to send in my membership to help support the great work that you do! When does the summer issue go up on the HANS website?
