Periorficial (Perioral and Periorbital) Dermatitis
What is it?

Periorficial dermatitis is a red rash that can develop around the mouth (perioral) or the eyes (periorbital). It primarily affects females, although males are affected as well, and is most commonly seen in the 16 to 45 age group. This condition is a variant of rosacea it is often made worse through the use of topical steroid creams.

Symptoms

Tiny red pimples (micropapules and pustules) usually form first around the mouth and sides of nose, before migrating up to the sides of the eyes, merging together to form raised patches with tiny scales. The border of the lips (vermillion border) is often spared. Unlike acne, which it is often confused with, there will not be any comedones (white and black heads). People often feel itching, burning and tightness of their skin. Because this condition is on the face and thus highly visible people with it often suffer social embarrassment and anxiety.

Treatment

The primary treatment for periorficial dermatitis is custom designed herbal prescriptions, which address the root cause of the condition. Periorficial dermatitis is notoriously made worse by a wide variety of topical creams and lotions. The best way to treat it, aside from herbal medicine, is to leave the skin alone and avoid covering it up with make-up, moisturizing creams, or other agents.

Success

Periorficial dermatitis responds well to herbal medicine, with the majority of patients seeing results within the first 2 to 6 weeks of treatment. It takes about 5 months of treatment (on average) before patients see their skin totally cleared and many patients report long term stability after stopping their herbal medicines.

“Before seeing Dr. Erikson I was struggling with the embarrassment of peri-oral dermatitis.
After seeing him for only 3 months, my face had almost completely cleared and my skin
was no longer the oily mess it used to be.”
