Breast-feeding helps prevent childhood eczema

By December 3, 2010Eczema/ dermatitis

Researchers at McGill University conducted a study to assess if breast-feeding reduced gastrointestinal infection and/or atopic eczema among infants. A total of 17046 mother/ infant pairs particpated in the study, with the infants being breast feed for at least 3-6 months and remonitored 1 year later.

The researchers concluded a 50% reduction in atopic dermititis (eczema) cases and as well a great reduction in gastrointestinal rates (both conditions are often related according to Chinese medicine). This is a very significant reduction and shows the importance of preventative care. With eczema rates skyrocketing over the past several decades we have to do everything we can to help prevent it. It goes to show that the basic and natural process of breast-feeding our youngsters as their initial food supply, goes a long way towards improving long term health.
